J.M.J. (Jesus Mary Joseph) College for Women, Tenali is one of the many educational institutions, established by the Congregation of Jesus Mary Joseph (Society of JMJ) inspired by the teachings of Jesus Christ. Rev. Fr. Mathias Wolff S.J. founded the Society of the J.M.J. in the year 1822 in the Netherlands for the Education of the young girls. Spreading far and wide, the Society established its first branch in India, Andhra Pradesh, Guntur in 1904.

To meet the higher education needs of the Society, especially the economically, socially backward and rural girls, the J.M.J. Sisters established a Degree College in Tenali then a rural area on 01-07-1963 under the Societies Registration Act XXI of 1860. The foundation stone was laid for the first wing of the college in December 1963 by Mother Marie-de- Montfort Superior General of the Society.

In the year 1964, B.A. class was started with 12 students and in 1965 permission was given to commerce B.Sc. with 24 students. The Hostel with 30 students formed as part of the sister's quarters which was located in a rented building in the town. In July 1965, the college was shifted to the permanent site. Classes were conducted partially in the temporary sheds and in the one wing of the main building. On May 17 th 1966, Sri A. Balaram Reddy Minister for Education A.P laid the foundation stone for the second wing. In the year 1969, a two-year Intermediate course was introduced in Science and arts in both media. Ever since the strength of the college began to increase, in the year 1971 the college was accorded permanent affiliation and B.Com course was introduced.

The college has beautiful gardens, spacious sports grounds and sports facilities. From the outset JMJ college made every effort to see high standards in education and that high education standards are maintained and results secured. Ever since the college was started almost every year students secured university ranks 100% results and won several gold medals. Nearly 10,000 students have graduated and some of the old students of the college are working as Govt. Officers, Bank officers, Scientists, Doctors, Advocates, Lecturers, Teachers, Professors, Engineers both in India and different parts of the world. Some students are also settled as Industrialists and businesswomen. JMJ believe in giving an education that promotes all round development of the students. Utmost attention is paid to extra-curricular activities like sports and games, NCC, NSS, cultural and literary activities. The JMJ College has rendered its 61 years of services to the women of Andhra Pradesh in empowering to reach higher goals.
