About Us

Established in 1963, Jesus Mary Joseph (JMJ) College for Women, Tenali, is a distinguished Minority Institution dedicated to empowering rural and economically disadvantaged girls. Registered under the Society Registration Act XXI of 1860, it stands as a beacon of academic excellence in Andhra Pradesh, welcoming students from across India for the past 61 years.

Our Legacy

Our journey traces back to the visionary efforts of Rev. Fr. Mathias Wolff S.J., founder of the JMJ Society in 1822 in the Netherlands, with the mission to provide education and liberation to Catholic girls. The architectural blueprint for our institution was crafted by Rev. Sr. Stanislaus Swamikannu Pillai, whose vision aimed to educate and empower rural girls.

Inauguration

On July 1st, 1963, our doors opened at the Municipal High School with an inaugural ceremony graced by His Lordship Bishop Ignatius and Sri Alapati Balaram Reddy, the then Educational Minister. With an initial enrollment of 75 Arts and Science Pre-University College students, our journey began with a commitment to nurturing young minds.

A Pioneering Legacy of Academic Excellence

Throughout its illustrious history, JMJ College for Women has cultivated a renowned reputation for pioneering academic excellence, drawing students not just from Andhra Pradesh but also from across the nation. Our unwavering commitment to delivering quality education and fostering holistic development has positively impacted numerous lives and propelled societal progress. Today, our institution stands as a beacon of hope for rural and economically disadvantaged girls, nurturing academic brilliance and fostering social empowerment. With over six decades of transformative education, we continue to illuminate paths toward a brighter future, shaping the minds and destinies of generations to come.

Vision

Our vision is to educate, enrich and empower the young girls, nurturing their academic excellence, fostering spiritual growth, and instilling noble principles to shape them to integrated forces for change, both at home and in society.

Mission

JMJ Higher Education aims to promote the intellectual development of rural youth, particularly those who are socially and economically marginalized, enabling them to serve society. We aim to cultivate competence, commitment, and compassion, moulding dynamic leaders and global citizens.

Aims & Objectives

Transforming girls into women of character and wisdom.
Modulating thoughts toward service and order.
Igniting minds with intellect and elegance.
Empowering hearts to lead with compassion and innovation.
Inculcating spiritual values essential for societal leadership.

Our Inspirational Journey

In its infancy, JMJ College faced formidable challenges, yet with divine providence and the support of visionaries like Sri Alapati Venkataramaih, former Cabinet Minister for Local Administration, A.P., and Sri Kanneganti Reddamma, then President of the Central Bank of Co-operative Society, Tenali, paved the way forward.

The foundation stone for the college's first wing was laid in December 1963 by Mother Marie-de-Montfort, the Superior General of the Society, and Sri Alapati Venkataramaiah. By 1965, it launched B.Sc courses and relocated to a permanent site, gaining UGC recognition.

Under the visionary leadership of Rev. Sr. Anna Maria Gali, the first Principal, the college flourished, adding infrastructure and academic offerings. In 1969, Intermediate courses were introduced, further enhancing educational opportunities.

In 1976, the college was affiliated with Acharya Nagarjuna University, solidifying its academic standing. By 1982, the General Inspection Committee, led by Prof. D. Bhaskar Reddy, then Vice Chancellor of Acharya Nagarjuna University, recognized JMJ College as one of the best in the university.

Today, JMJ College epitomizes resilience and excellence, molding intellectually competent, morally upright, socially committed, and spiritually inspired women in the spirit of Christian humanism.

Society of JMJ

The Society of Jesus Mary Joseph came to existence under the above title for the education of young girls. It started in India with the arrival of seven Dutch missionaries in Guntur, A.P., India on February 24, 1904. In 1962 the Indian province obtained autonomy. The formation of three autonomous provinces - Bangalore, Guntur and Hyderabad took place in July 1987. In 2009 a fourth province namely Raipur Province was erected in Chattisgarh. The Society has 1,238 members working in various countries of Netherlands, Indonesia, Africa, (Ghana) Rome, India and America (New Mexico). The Charism of the Society is "Ever Adaptable Apostolic Availability". According to the needs of the times and places, the Society takes up various apostolates and ministres. The members devote themselves to Medical, Educational, Pastoral and Social works.

110 years ago, the Society of JMJ that made a humble beginning with just seven Dutch sisters, has 100 communities all over the country, serving in 145 institutions of schools, colleges, technical training schools, hospitals, schools and colleges of nursing, health centres, social work centres for development of women and tribals, community colleges for school drop-outs, homes for the aged, handicapped, integrated school for the blind, lepers, HIV / AIDS counseling centres etc.

The JMJ Society in India is ever ready and open to the signs of the times to spread the kingdom of God which is a kingdom of peace, love and justice among our Indian people.

College Prayer

God, our Father I praise and thank You
for giving me this day.

I offer myself, totally to You
my mental powers,
my talents, my abilities
and all that I am.

Accept me my Lord, my will, my mind, my heart
and all that I do today.

Bless my every effort, to do my duty,
and study diligently.

Bless my parents,
teachers, companions
and everyone I meet today,

Lord I trust that Your unfailing love
will guide, guard
and protect me always
Almighty God,
You who are always
faithfull to Your promises,
be with me
when I call upon You,

Our Father who art in Heaven,
Hallowed be Thy name
Thy kingdom come,
Thy will be done on earth,
as it is in Heaven.
Give us to-day our daily bread,
forgive us our tresspasses
as we forgive
those who tresspass against us.
And lead us not into temptation.
deliver us from evil.
